Race 8, 2nd Half

Aug 28, 2013      Wind Conditions: Light

The last race of the 2013 season looked like it was to be a non-event in that there was no wind on the lake all day. In true Wednesday night racing form, winds started for the 15 boats that came out. The crew of Wild Thing as RC gave us a I-5 course using a hip hop to windward and Hog Back as leeward. Before the start the filling wind shifted right, making the boat end favored so it got really crowded there. Crackerjack managed to sort it out and got a great start which earned them a 1st place overall and on corrected time, followed by Witch Way in 2nd, and Joy in 3rd. Thanks to all for a great 2013 season.

Race7, 2nd Half

Aug 21, 2013      Wind Conditions: Light

Congratulations to Crackerjack in 1st, Witch Way in 2nd and Joy in 3rd. The crew of Cut Loose gave us an I-5 course in light air with the start line near the north end of Long Is, the windward at North Canoe and a hiphop as the leeward mark. As the race went on the wind did not, so John gave a shortened course to end at the start/finish as an I-3. Next week has the crew of Wild Thing as RC. This is the last race of the 2013 season. The after season awards will be presented at Carl R's.

Race 5, 2nd Half

Aug 07, 2013      Wind Conditions: Medium

Wednesday Night Racing gave the 14 boats that came out to sail a good one. The crew of Break Away as RC gave us a W-4 course with the start just north of the LGC and the windward mark using North Canoe. The winds were from 200 deg at 10-12 with some higher puffs at times. The pin end of the line seemed to be favored, so a flock of boats tried to start there, but some were over eager, so had to restart as they were over early. Vaporize managed to thread the needle through them and continued east to the left side of the course. The winds were shifty, so taking the lifts and tacking on the headers seemed to work out for the leaders. Line honors went to the viper, but great sailing by Joy gave them at 1st followed by Witch Way in 2nd and Uncle Ludwig in 3rd, 6 seconds ahead of Vaporize on CT. Next week has John Haller as RC, followed by Cut Loose and Wild Thing for the last race of the season. (Note: Molasses confused with Music Man on scoring. Music Man did not race.)

Race 4, 2nd Half

Jul 31, 2013      Wind Conditions: Light

Another beautiful evening of sailing on Wednesday Night was had by the 19 boats on the start line. John Tarrent and his wife Trish as RC gave us an I-5 course using North Canoe mark as windward and they set a bouy just north of LGC as the leeward mark. At the start Vaporize, Witch Way and Crackerjack went left upwind while a lot of the fleet tacked back right. Going left proved to be the right move as these three boats lead the fleet around the marks. Vaporize lead the fleet at the finish as the wind was going away. Witch Way stayed close behind, getting 1st overall, with Crackerjack in 2nd and Vaporize in 3rd on CT. Next week has the crew of Break Away as RC. Would you believe there are only four weeks remaining in the 2013 season!

Race 3, 2nd Half

Jul 24, 2013      Wind Conditions: Medium

The 3rd race of the 2nd Half gave the 14 boats out for a Wednesday night race a thriller. Winds were predicted to be about 6 knots. We were treated to 15 knots from the WNW at the start with variable 10 to 20. The crew of Spirit as RC gave us a W4 setting a line north of Long Island and using the government mark at Cotton Point as the windward. The asymmetrical boats were hitting 13.4 knots for a high with a lot of surfing to be had. At the start the pin end seemed to be favored, so several of the boats went left, but many tacked early and went right. JaKo, Joy and the viper finally tacked to port and caught a great lift, staying above the rest of the fleet that had tacked to port earlier. Vaporize rounded ahead of the fleet and blasted down the course. JaKo lost their spinnaker halyard and did some fancy work to get it back. This hurt them as it allowed Animal and Joy to pass at some point in the race. The last leg downwind was another blast of surfing. In the end, Vaporize finished 1st on both ET and CT with Joy in 2nd and Animal in 3rd. Next week has the crew of Catchin' J's as RC. ( Note: Time error on Animal corrected 7-29-2013)

Race 2, 2nd Half

Jul 17, 2013      Wind Conditions: Light

Wednesday Night Racing gave the 13 boats that dared to show up an interesting sail with light winds and 90+ temps. PSYCHO as RC gave us an I-5 course using buoys that he set. Crackerjack had another great night as they led the fleet wire to wire and won overall, followed by Animal in second and Joy in third. The after-race party was held at King Neptune's with awards given out for the first half of the season. Next week has Rodger Voss of Spirit as RC.

Race 1, 2nd Half

Jul 10, 2013      Wind Conditions: Medium

Another great night of sailing for the 14 boats on the start line was had. The crew of JaKo gave us an I-7 using the government bouy at North Canoe and a leeward mark set just north of the LGC. The viper went left at the start and managed to stay ahead of the fleet. Joy seemed to follow in my shadow and lead the rest of the fleet, capturing 1st overall, with Crackerjack in 2nd and Animal in 3rd. Next week has PSYCHO as RC for our 2nd race of the 2nd Half.

Race 9, 1st Half

Jul 03, 2013      Wind Conditions: Medium

The ninth and last race of the first half gave the 18 boats out on Wednesday night a great evening of racing. The crew of Moriah use Hogback as a windward mark and Cotton Point as the leeward, an I-5 ( 2X around ) with the winds at 5-10 from the SSW. Some crews made out well going left on one leg and then right on another. John Dickenson took a chance going left upwind after rounding Cotton Point in seventh to pull up to second at Hogback. This helped Cut Loose get a second overall, their best of the season. Crackerjack lead the way to a first, both on line honors and corrected time. Witch Way finished third. Next week starts our second half of the season with the crew of JaKo as RC.

Race 8, 1st Half

Jun 27, 2013      Wind Conditions: Light

The 12 boats that decided to go sailing and ignore the weather forecast were well rewarded with clearing skies an a nice southerly winds. The crew of Joy dropped a buoy near the west shore at Yankee and used the government buoy at North Canoe with a W-6 (six laps or 3X around). The start line was a bit short, which gave most on the starting line some excitement. Vaporize took the pin end of the line and went left while Witch Way went right. When the two came back together, the Viper was in the lead and never looked back. There were a lot of tactical decisions in the race with a lot of action at the marks. As the race went on, the winds went from 8 down to about 4 knots, but all boats finished under an hour. Witch Way took another bullet with Vaporize second and Jupiter third. Nice job by Joy and crew as RC. Next week is the ninth and last race of the first half of the season with the crew of Moriah as RC. Awards for first, second and third will be given out at a date TBD.

Race 7, 1st Half

Jun 19, 2013      Wind Conditions: Medium

Finally the 20 boats that came out to sail on Wednesday night had good winds and NO RAIN. The crew of Jupiter gave us a W-6 (six legs) course with the windward buoy set upwind about 3/4-mile away. At the start boats split with some going left and others right upwind. On one of the crosses, Vaporize did a lee-bow on JaKo, causing JaKo to tack away right. Vaporize got a good lift on that tack and led the fleet for the rest of the race, getting line honors but eighth on CT. JaKo led the rest of the fleet to finish first on CT with Animal in second and Joy getting third. Next week has the crew of Joy as RC. Let's hope that summer is finally here.

Race 6, 1st Half

Jun 12, 2013      Wind Conditions: Medium

During the day of Race 6 of the first half of Wednesday Night Racing the winds blew from the north with gusts over 20 knots. True to form, as the hours went by, so did the velocity of the breeze. The 16 boats on the start line were given a W-6 (six-leg windward / leeward) by the crew of Amimal as RC. After the start the wind clocked CCW, so after the third leg a change of course was given using Hogback as the leeward mark. At that point the breeze slowed to less than 8 knots, letting the fleet spread out. The asym chutes lead the way after the change of course with John Haller's new J/70 getting line honors in only his second race. Top corrected places went to Witch Way in first, Uncle Ludwig in second and Joy in third. Next week has Jupiter as RC for Race 7 of the series.

Race 5, 1st Half

Jun 05, 2013      Wind Conditions: Light

Race 5 of the 1st Half was PAINFUL to say the least. The forecast was for light and variable and mother nature served it up that way at the start for the 18 boats on the line. The crew of Jam as RC filling in for Spirit gave a W4, but shortened the race to a W2. The center of the line generally had a great start with Witch Way, Wild Thing and Uncle Ludwig leading the way. After the decision to shorten the race, the wind filled in from the north with building winds (I later saw whitecaps) on the latter part of the second leg. The leaders took off and the final phrf results were the same as at the last mark for the top three, with Wild Thing taking line honors at the finish. Next week has Animal and crew as RC.

Race 4, 1st Half

May 29, 2013      Wind Conditions: Light

Our fourth race of the season gave the eight crews out on the water almost everything that mother nature could give them except wind. Uncle Ludwig had switched RC duties with Animal and set a W4 course using marks with light wind from 036 degrees. Just after the start, the wind turned westerly and died. Lucky for the red boat for being to the inside of the shift, and therefore able to lead the fleet to the first mark. After rounding that mark, lightning was observed, so the RC decided to shorten course at the second mark, making it only a two-leg race. Vaporize finished first on ET and CT with Witch Way in second and Crackerjack third. Two boats did not finish because of the pending storm. Later the sun came out and all were entertained with a double rainbow, but still no wind.

Race 3, 1st half

May 22, 2013      Wind Conditions: Medium

Tonight, Wednesday May 22 was my turn as RC. Going out onto the lake I could see some wind near Long Is. with Joy sailing close hauled with the wind coming from the south, southeast. There was more dark water to the north between Basin Bay and Dome Is, so headed out into the lake and set a hiphop somewhere between Hogback on the east and LGC to the west, using it as the windward mark if the wind holds. I picked up Nelson (my RH Hand man) at Yankee and proceeded north to set the start line. By then the wind had filled in some more so we set the line east of Lone Tree in the middle of the lake. As RC, we decided on a W-5 course (up, down, up, down with a windward finish). The 10 boats on the start line were given a great sail considering that an hour before there was little wind on the lake. Tactically some boats went left and others right. JaKo managed to do well by leading the fleet around the 1st 2 marks ahead of the fleet. JaKo decided to cover WitchWay by covering them tack for tack. On the 3rd leg of the race one of Joy's crew went for a swim so the J22 was observed doing circles to retrieve him. PHYSCO decided to bang the left corner on that leg, separating them from JaKo and WitchWay. That move turned out to be a winner as PHYSCO pulled out ahead to get their very 1st Place finish of the season. Joy was also rewarded a 2nd for their efforts of crew overboard and fast sailing, followed by JaKo for 3rd place overall.

Race 2, 1st Half

May 15, 2013      Wind Conditions: Medium

The second race of the 2013 season brought out 12 boats. During the day the weather and wind was back and forth...sun then rain and the wind was southerly sometimes about 6 and other times it was whitecapping. Forecast had winds of 20 with the possibility of thunder bumpers that luckily did not happen. The RC was JB and Paul T. from Crackerjack. They set up a windward/leeward two times around with the start line near the LGC and using South Canoe Mark as the windward. At the start there was some gelcoat exchanged between the Viper and Uncle Ludwig. Several boats were over the line early with two of the four boats going back, thus the other two were DSQ. During the race, the wind went from nice sailing to light. Welcome to Lake George. Wild Thing sailed a very clean race and led the fleet, finishing third on CT. Witch Way finished first on CT with JaKo in second. Next week has the crew of Vaporize as RC. UPDATE to Scoring: At a request from Joy, they are scored as DSQ for not doing the proper number of turns after an infraction with Jupiter. (Updated 5/22/2013)

Race 1, 1st Half

May 08, 2013      Wind Conditions: Light

The first race of the season for 2013 got off with 7 boats out on the water. The winds were light with intermittent rain, but the threatened thunder stayed away. RC for this race was Alfie and crew who set a w4 course which is 4 laps, start to a windward mark 250 yds to the north and using the start line pin end as the leeward mark. The red boat sailed by the first mark by 250 yds watching the rest of the fleet round it behind. Oh well! A battle insued with Animal rounding the last mark to lead the fleet to the finish. Uncle Ludwig managed to pass them on that leg for 1st overall, with Animal 2nd and PSYCHO 3rd. Next week has Crackerjack and crew as RC.
