Race 17, 2nd half

Aug 29, 2012      Wind Conditions: Light

The last race of the 2012 season gave us a light air, but still a great evening to be on Lake George. Break Away and crew were RC and gave us an I-5 course with windward/leeward bouys and a mid-line start/finish. The course was set north/south but the wind switched westerly giving the 17 boats out a very interesting race. A gaggle of boats were at the RC end of the line trying to break away from the fleet, with Animal jumping out for the lead. The rest of the fleet followed Drew and crew as Animal got 1st place and line honors, followed by Wild Thing and Vaporize.

Race 16, 2nd Half

Aug 22, 2012      Wind Conditions: Light

The 16th race of wednesday night with the crew of PSYCHO gave us a crazy race with the forcast winds southerly at 5-10, but instead from the west at maybe 5 knots. Mike set a mark to the west near Yankee, the start line in the middle of the lake and used Hogback as the leeward mark, calling for 2X around (5 legs). As the evening wore on, the 15 boats out there had challenging air as it keep filling in from the south, then the north and every where else than where you would want it. The lead swapped hands on the first leg, but Crackerjack headed left (north) downwind doing a tight reach like an asymetrical sailboat and pulled ahead. Some were hoping for a shortend course at the start/finish line (1X around) but this did not happen. Later the 2 horn blast and Code flag "S" was flown with the finish after rounding the 2nd upwind mark. The viper managed to get line honors, but with Crackerjack only 4 seconds behind won the night, with Spirit and Stinger making the race a J/24 sweep. Next wednesday is our last race of 2012 with Break Away as RC. Please remember the after race awards get together at Carl R's. See you on the water.

Race 15, 2nd Half

Aug 15, 2012      Wind Conditions: Light

Light winds, or lack of it was the norm for this wednesday night. The crew of Charger did their best and gave the 13 boats out there an I-4 course from near the LGC to North Canoe and a hiphop just about 100 yrs north of the start/finish line. As the wind went from not much to less than that, the RC called for a shorten course to just once around. At just before the start the wind was somewhat south, but at start time it switched to westerly. Vaporize slizzard out to the front and held the lead to the end. The rest of the fleet did what they could do with the dieing air as it went from east and then back to westerly. A very painful race. As the wind somewhat filled in later from the SW, Stinger and Catchin'Js figured it out and managed to pull ahead of most of the fleet, gaining on the viper ahead. In the end, John Tarrant on Catchin'Js captured 1st, his 1st first for the season, with Vaporize 2nd and Stinger 3rd. Next week has the crew of PSYCHO as RC.

Race 13, 2nd Half

Aug 14, 2012      Wind Conditions: Medium

The race originally scheduled for Aug 1st was made up tuesday night Aug 14th. The crew of Joy gave us a W6 (6 leg Windward course) using North Canoe as the windward mark and the line close to the LGC. It was a nice evening of sailing for the nine boats that came out. The first leg had some tacking duels with the viper making the top mark first but went right down wind and died. Stinger stayed the course to lead with Uncle Ludwig close behind in 2nd followed by Crackerjack for 3rd on CT. Updated results because of time given to Catchin'Js (8-15-2012)

Race 14, 2nd Half

Aug 08, 2012      Wind Conditions: Medium

Wednesday Night Racing started the day with very little wind, but by race time the wind filled in from the south giving the 15 boats a nice evening of sailing. Tom Selfridge gave us a 2 bouy I 5 course that had a slight skew on both the course and the start line giving the start some excitement. Crackerjack tried a port start but found Vaporize charging on starboard and had to tack, the viper did so too and jumped out in front for the lead. At the 2nd leeward mark the wind shifted 90 or more degrees. Stinger saw the change and dropped their chute quicker that Crackerjack who was ahead of them and managed to pass. That heads up move by Stinger gave them their 5th First Place finish for the season beathing Vaporize by 6 seconds on corrected time with Crackerjack in 3rd place.

Race12, 2nd Half

Jul 25, 2012      Wind Conditions: Medium

The RC, crew of Moriah gave the 17 boats a windward/leeward race using Cotton Point to the north and Hogback about a half mile south of the start/finish line. The 3 leg race had a right had skew with a bunch of boats at the committee boat end of the line trying not to be over early which was not the case. A general recall brought us all back for a second start. Cooler heads prevailed an a clean start was had. Spirit and Animal took a clearing tack to the right while Crackerjack and Vaporize at mid-line powered ahead in the 8 to 10 knots of wind. The viper slittered up and around the first mark, set chute and vaporized the fleet for their 4th win of the season, hitting 9.7 knots downwind to Hogback. Crackerjack rounded 2nd and held her place with Spirit working hard for 3rd to stay ahead of PSYCHO in 4th. Great job Mike Willig and crew! Next week the crew of Joy gets their turn as RC.

Race 11, 2nd Half

Jul 18, 2012      Wind Conditions: Heavy

Race 11 of Wednesday Night Racing, the 2nd race of the 2nd Half was forcast for 8 mph winds from the NNW. Welcome to Lake George as the 16 boats were treated to winds of 20-25 knots. The crew of Cut Loose gave a windward bouy set at 45 deg from the start line and South Canoe mark along with the 2 islands, all to port, 2X around. The RC boat cut loose from the bottom and abandoned the race at the start because the line was favored at the pin end too much. They re-anchored the boat and got off a good start. The heavy winds gave us all some challenging sailing with some wild rides down wind. Most of the boats were surfing on the waves. Vaporize did not have the speed puck on so exact numbers are only a guess at between 16 and 18 knots of speed, especially on the last leg to the finish. The race was shorted to 1X around because of the previous delay. Spirit came in 1st followed by Crackerjack and Catchin J's. Next week has Moriah as RC.

Race 10, 2nd Half

Jul 11, 2012      Wind Conditions: Medium

This wednesday night was the 1st race of the 2nd Half with the crew of Crackerjack as RC. The party barge gave the 16 boats a windward/leeward course with the wind coming from the south, 3X around (6 legs). The wind started to drop, so the by now very happy party barge shortened the course to 4 legs with Revolution getting line honors. Animal earned their 1st of the season with Joy in 2nd and Stinger in 3rd. After the racing we all headed over to the LGC Grotto and had a great time of celebration hosted by J/24 fleet 24. Thanks you J/24 and the LGC for your support to wednesday night racing. Ellen brought up a mini regatta for J/24's on saturday afternoon later this month. Awards were presented to the top 3 for the 1st Half and sponsored in part by Yankee Marine. The top 3 were Stinger, Vaporize and Crackerjack for the 1st Half. Thanks to all for making this a great time.

Race 9, 1st Half

Jul 04, 2012      Wind Conditions: Light

The 9th race of the 2012 that was held on the 4th of July brought out 13 boat to celebrate our nations birthday. The crew of Jupiter was the RC and gave us a windward/leeward course with the start line near Hogback and a windward mark to the NW calling for a 3 times around (6 leg race). The summer winds decided differently and Amir decided to shorted the course after 3 legs. Vaporize led the fleet with Stinger very close behind at the 2nd mark. The viper managed to round the mark with some speed, where as the rest of the fleet had problems with the dying wind at that mark and finished 1st overall (their 3rd first of the season), followed by Stinger in 2nd and Uncle Ludwig in 3rd. Next week is the 1st half awards to be presented at the LGC Grotto after wednesday night racing. The awards are given to the top 3 boats for the 1st Half and is sponsored by Yankee Marine Group. More info on this mid season get together will follow. Next week has the crew of Crackerjack as RC, our sponsor for the 1st half.

Race8, 1st Half

Jun 27, 2012      Wind Conditions: Medium

Wednesday night gave the 16 boats a wonderful night for sailing and racing. The winds during the day were gusty from the NW and continued that way for the start of the race with the crew of Catchin'Js as RC. John gave us a windward/leeward 3 times around (7 leg race) using a bouy set to the NW of the start/finish line and Hogback as the leeward mark. Stinger, Crackerjack and Vaporize swapped the lead at different times with the viper leading the course at the 1st mark with Crackerjack close behing. As the race progressed, the wind backed off a bit in volocity and swung about 25 degress CW giving a tight reach on the 2nd downwind leg to Hogback. The upwind leg gave a close-hauled beat to the windward mark for most. Alot of tight racing was had, but in the end, Stinger came in 1st on CT with Crackerjack and Animal a minute or so behind. Thanks John Tarrant on a great course. Next week has the crew of Jupiter as RC. Please remember that July 11 is the after race get together at the LGC hosted by J24 Fleet 24 for food and cheer and the 1st Half awards to be presented to the top 3 boats hosted by Yankee Marine Group.

Race 7, 1st Half

Jun 20, 2012      Wind Conditions: Light

Race #7 was held on the "summer solstice" the longest day of the year. Wed night was also the hottest so far with tempuratures in the mid 90's. For this race the crew of Jam gave us a windward 5 leg race with the start line just south of Hogback near Long Island and the windward mark set at 325 deg magnetic from there just north of the LGC as the finish line. The winds were light and variable for the 13 boats that came out to play. The race was long and somewhat painful as everyone was looking to find the wind pressure. Vaporize did their light air thing and won for the 2nd time of the season with Moriah in 2nd and Stinger in 3rd. Next week has the crew of Catchin J's as RC.

Race 6, 1st Half

Jun 13, 2012      Wind Conditions: Heavy

What a difference a week makes. This week the 16 boats sailing were treated to moderate to HEAVY air from the north blowing 20. The RC of JaKo gave us a 5 leg race with a windward bouy set 3/4 mile to the north of the start/finish line (off the northern tip of Long Island) and the government make at North Canoe Is. Spirit went left at the start and found the 1st mark ahead. The rest of the fleet was close behind. This race was probably one for the memory bank as there were some exciting times to come. Vaporize jibed east on the downwind and hit 12.2 knots on the Puck with a constant 11.5 for the leg. The viper rounded the leeward mark 1st and proceded up the course on the right side trying to strech the lead so taked back over to starboard to cover the fleet. At that tack, the dummy on the helm had the tiller slip from his hand and the boat auto-tacked and over they went. Dave, in the water crawled over and released the vang so it would come back up, which it did, and off we went to the races. At the 2nd windward mark, Spirit pulled ahead of the fleet and finished 1st overall in the race. The crew of Joy captured 2nd on CT and Animal 3rd on CT. Congratulations to all. Next week has the crew of Jam as RC

Race 5, 1st Half

Jun 08, 2012      Wind Conditions: Light

Our 5th race of the season had the crew of Revolution as RC. As everyone of the 14 boats there can attest that the conditions were less than ideal. John gave us a 5 leg race but had to shorten it with only 3 legs at the original start line. Congradulations the Stinger, Catchin J's and Moriah for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Next week has JaKo and crew as RC.

Race 4, 1st Half

May 30, 2012      Wind Conditions: Medium

Our 4th race of wednesday night racing had the crew of Vaporize as RC. Dave and Nelson set a 5 leg course using HogBack as windward and a bouy set down near Lone Tree as leeward. At the start of the race, the 16 boats on hand had good sailing conditions with the wind SE at 8 or so knots. Revolution tacked to the right and rounded 1st all the marks of the course. Tight sailing was had by all, with Revolution and Stinger leading the way. Coming up through the pack was Moriah like a freight train. Stinger held on for 1st, followed by Revolution in 2nd and Moriah in 3rd all on CT. Next week has John Haller on Revolution as RC.

Race3, 1st Half

May 23, 2012      Wind Conditions: Medium

This 3rd race of the series proved to be the best wind and weather yet with 10-12 from the NNE and clear skies for the 13 boats racing. Uncle Ludwig as RC gave us a 7 leg windward/leeward (3X around) course with a bouy set about 1/2 mile to the north and the govt mark at north canoe as leeward. At the start line there was some conjestion, so Vaporize tacked out early to the right. This proved to be crucial as the viper got out in clear air and stayed there. The rest of the fleet went right as well. On the 2nd downwind leg, the wind went CCW about 20 degress allowing for a GREAT reach to the leeward mark allowing the viper to increase it's lead. With the sun going down, the RC decided to shorten the race to the start/finish line after the 3rd windward mark giving us 6 legs of racing. Vaporize got their 1st of the season, with points leader Stinger in 2nd and Joy for 3rd. Next week Dave and Nelson watch the fleet race as RC.

Race 2, 1st Half

May 16, 2012      Wind Conditions: Light

The 2nd race on wednesday night had a front come through with rain storms, but by 6:30 the weather cleared and the wind shifted northerly. The crew of Spirt as RC gave the 13 boats on hand an "I" course, 2X around (6 legs) with a bouy set north as windward and the Canoe Is group as the leeward mark. Several boats were over early, but quickly regrouped. Tight racing continued over the course, but the wind being light gave us a shorted course after the 2nd windward mark at the start/finish line. Of course, the wind strengthened on the last leg and brought the fleet to finish within 9 minutes of the leader on ET. Congratulations to Stinger in 1st, JaKo 2nd, and Catchin'Js 3rd. Next week has Uncle Ludwig as RC.

Race 1, 1st Half

May 09, 2012      Wind Conditions: Medium

Our first wednesday night race for 2012 got underway with the crew of Stinger as RC and 12 boats on the line. Under cloudy skies, 6knots of wind from the SW, the RC called for an "I" course with 5 legs. With the start/finish line near the LGC, North Canoe mark as windward and a temp bouy 1/4 mile north of the start line, the fleet bunched up on the RC end of the line. Moriah was called "over early", but that did not hurt her final result with a 5th. As the wind swung west, all the legs turned into a fetch with very little tacking. Spirt managed to lead the way with Uncle Ludwig and Jam close behind. Next week has Spirit as RC.
