RACE 17 (8-31-2011)

Aug 31, 2011      Wind Conditions: Light

For our final race of the 2011 WNR Series with Bill Zautner and crew of "Steamin" went out and set a few (3) buoys hoping the wind would fill in from somewhere as LG had been a mill pond all day. At the usual time about 6:30 a zeffer from the SW came in allowing the 14 racers a triangle course, meant to be 2X around. Vaporize took off in the light stuff. The rest of the fleet tried flying chutes to no avail as what wind there was died. The RC shorted the course to once around. With Stinger and Spirit fighting for 1st overall and Spirit ahead, it was time for Stinger to pull victory from the mouth of defeat. Stinger jibed away from the pack in front and sailed around them. Vaporize lead all the way, but Stinger got the brass ring and 1st overall both in this race and the season.

Race 16 (8/24/11)

Aug 24, 2011      Wind Conditions: Heavy

Race Committee: Wild Thing. A big turnout for a big south wind of 18-20 at the start, easing somewhat to 12-13 by the end of the race. A long course, from a start line east of the LGC down to Diamond Island buoy and back to a downwind finish. Vaporize led the charge downwind, crossing in just under an hour, but did not have enough of a margin to hold off the symmetricals, as all the other boats finished within ten minutes of each other, in just over an hour.

Race 15 (8-17-2011)

Aug 17, 2011      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Tom Selfridge. You had to look hard but the Preparatory Flag was being held high. It was just that his little boy is only three feet tall. The fleet got in sync around the 3 minute countdown mark and then off the fleet went on a sprint around Canoe Islands and back. It was tight to get up on the line on starboard so many tried a port tack after the start and boy was there opportunity for a lot of crunching, but I believe most was avoided. After an hour of racing the finish was about as crowded with all the boats finishing at once.

RACE 14 (8-10-2011)

Aug 10, 2011      Wind Conditions: Medium

Can you believe that we have had 14 races already, with 3 more to go till the 2011 season of Wed Nite Racing is over. Ron Bryne and crew of Charjer as RC gave us an I-5 (I-2X around) using North Canoe as a windward mark. Tight racing was had by the fleet of 21 boats. Revolution crossed the line first with Animal (Andrew Brodie) close behind. The asymetrical boats took a big hit on this race! Congrats to Amimal on their 1st place finish. Next week is the 6th throwout. A tight season exists between 1&2 and 3&4 in the point totals. Next week has Tom Selfridge as RC.

Wed all day, the LG was a vertual mill pond. Race 13 was about the same. Fifteen boats showed up for the drifting conditions. After a 10 min delay, RC of "Jam" and crew called for a W4 (2X around)as the wind came in from the WSW very light. Vaporize started at the pin and lead the rest of the race in a dying wind. RC called for a shorten course at the 2nd mark. As the viper finished, the wind picked up a bit giving Stinger 1st over-all by 10 seconds CT.

RACE 12 (7-27-2011)

Jul 27, 2011      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race 12 gave us nice winds @ 6knots. Moriah as RC gave us an I-5 (2X around) with Hogback as leeward and a red bouy to the north as windward. Exciting racing was had by the 20 boats on the line. Vaporize took the RC end of the line to lead the fleet around the course, but not enough ahead on time as Stinger earned 1st place followed by T and Spirit.

RACE 11 (7-21-2011)

Jul 21, 2011      Wind Conditions: Light

Earlier in the day, the wind gods were blowing nicely from the SSE at 12+, but decided to do otherwise for Race 11. The crew of Jako called for a W4 (2x around)in nice air. As the leaders rounded the 1st mark, the wind started to drop. Spirit managed to lead from that point on to win their 4th race (2 in a row). We had a nice turnout of 18 boats. Afterward, J/24 Fleet 24 hosted a party at the Grotto. THANK YOU. We had North Sails on hand for on the water coaching by Mike Ingham and Chuck Allen. Chuck was on Spirt as if Rodger needed any help! A good time was had by all. Next week has Moriah as RC.

RACE 10 (7-13-2011)

Jul 13, 2011      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race 10, at about 4:30 LG had a front roll thru with stiff winds and some rain. I was looking on-line and the tv at the approaching system and called Rodger. I told him that I thought it would blow thru before 6:00pm as it did. He was washing the bottom of Spirt at the time. Windog as RC with Adam DiSantis gave us a W/L from near Long Is. to Cottom Pt. and down to a leeward mark, 2X around. The top 3 boats headed to the west shore and made out on the fleet. On the downwind ride, Adam shorten the course to finish upwind of the leeward mark because the wind had shifted. Because of his pre-race prep, Spirt and crew got their 3rd wind of the season, followed by Cut Loose and Vaporize. This next wk 8-16 is the mid-seson get together at the Grotto at the LGC hosted by J/24 Fleet 24. Jako has RC that evening. We had 18 boats on the start line, even though the weather looked as if it was going to dampen our fun. NOT to BE!

RACE 9 (7-06-2011)

Jul 06, 2011      Wind Conditions: Light

This wednesday in the afternoon a front came through with the usual thunder-bumpers and rain. As 6pm came, Race 9 was not to be denied a race. With Cut Loose as RC, John gave us a W/L 3x around. The wind was clocking around and at the start, who knew what was windward or leeward, but some figured it out better than others. After a shuffel at the first mark, Revolution took off and finished ahead of the fleet, followed by Stinger and Joy. Congates to Joy on their 1st place over-all on CT and their 1st of the season. Next week has Windog (Frank Nigro) as RC.

RACE 8 (6-29-2011)

Jun 29, 2011      Wind Conditions: Medium

Visit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/64776037@N08/sets/72157626970422541/show/ for photos by John Haller on committee boat. Race 8 with Revolution as RC gave us an "I" Course, 2X around. With the wind out of the WSW and shifting about 25 deg made for some interesting strategies. Cut Loose made an early tack for the right side of the course to lead every one at the first mark. Vaporize did the usual and jibed to port to clear its air downwind, crossing the finish ahead of the fleet, BUT not enough as Stinger captured their first win of the season, followed by Spirit and Vaporize. Momentum is growing as we had 17 boats on the line. Wednesday night at its best. Next week has Cut Loose (John Dickinson) as RC.

RACE 7 (6-22-2011)

Jun 22, 2011      Wind Conditions: Light

Race 7.....Steady RAIN and light, but steady air from the north. The crew of CrackerJack as RC gave us an "I" course, once around with a windward bouy set and North Canoe mark as leeward. Thirteen boats showed up, dispite the weather.....HEY, it's Wed Nite! Jako lead the fleet wire to wire for their 1st win or the season.

RACE 6 (6-15-2011)

Jun 15, 2011      Wind Conditions: Light

Race 6 gave the crew of Uncle Ludwig a chance to roll the dice. They called for an "I" course with a WINDWARD mark near the LGC and LEEWARD at HogBack. During the sequence, the wind did a 180 deg. shift from west to east, giving us a spinnaker start for most. The wind kept changing direction with most everyone putting up and down their chutes as if they were roller shades. RC called for shortened course at HogBack. Catchin' J's had rounded the first mark ahead of Stinger and the rest of the fleet. On the last leg, the dice rolled as the fleet shuffled. Vaporize pulled away, then stopped as Jako and Catchin" J's crossed 1st-2nd. The overall win going to John Tarrent on Catchin' J's

RACE 5 (6-08-2011)

Jun 08, 2011      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race 5 started out as another great day of sailing on LG with 6-8 knts of wind with some higher gusts S-SW. John Tarrant as RC gave us a W/L 2-1/2. With the shifty conditions, tacking on the headers, Vaporize and T led the field around the marks. A reach to the 2nd mark allowed those two to pull away from the rest. On the 3rd leg a severe storm was approching, so the RC shorted course at the 3rd mark. A good call by John as the lightening and winds wipped thru the 2nd half of the fleet, giving some excitement for those on the water. Congrats to T on his 1st place finish.

RACE 4 (6-11-2011)

Jun 01, 2011      Wind Conditions: Heavy

What a difference a week makes! Last week was light and fluky. With a front going thru earlier, the winds were 15+ and gusty. RC (Dougall/Snowden) set a W/L 2-1/2 north of HogBack with a finish near the LGC. Many of the boats had round-up's and knock-downs in these conditions. Joy was seen with crew standing on the keel. Stinger led the fleet at the 1st 2 marks, then it was Spirit's turn. Stinger and Spirit had a tacking duel coming up the last leg on the right side. So, Uncle Ludwig went left into more pressure and finished first (2nd time this season) overall. Great Job!

RACE 3 (5-25-2011)

May 25, 2011      Wind Conditions: Light

Race #3 of the Wed Night series started out with 16 boats on the line with 8 knts from the south. As RC, Bill Dutcher gave us a windward/leeward course (6 legs) from near the LGC to the gvmt mark at North Canoe. The race saw many changes in leaders. Vaporize, Stinger, Wild Thing, Jako and Revolution all had moments of greatness. As the time went on, the sun setting, the wind dying and switching to WSW, it was Spirit who showed their greatness, to finish 1st across the line and 1st overall.

RACE 2 (5-18-2011)

May 18, 2011      Wind Conditions: Light

Race #2 gave us light and shifty winds for the 14 of us that came out to play. Rodger as RC called 5 legs of a windward/leeward course. The Asymetrical boats led the race, BUT the 150% gennys of the J-24's powered their way to within 93 seconds of the viper to earn the top place, going to Uncle Ludwig. A gagle of J-24's and a J-22 shuffled to order some more. Wed Night Racing....light wind and no Rain. Be There!

RACE 1 (5-11-2011)

May 11, 2011      Wind Conditions: Medium

This season's wed nite races started under great conditions. Alfie as RC gave the 12 boats a fun race windward/leeward with 5 legs. Vaporize had to duck one boat at the start and crossed the finish line first, BUT not enough ahead of Spirit, Jam and Jako.
