Race 16

Aug 27, 2008      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Bill Dutcher. With too many possibilites for a shuffle in the top 5 and even in the Sweet 16 for RC priviledges next season, there was no question we were going to race. Even in the very light wind. The RC set an optimistic W 1-1/2 that lasted 1 hour for the first boat and 1/2 hour later for the last boat. Crakerjack, Jag, and Witch Way tacked north while Vaporize, Wild Thing, and Spirit stayed on starboard in hopes to find a wind line. Right was right and they led the way to the first mark 1/4 mile off the LGC shore. With Crackerjack's win it tied Joy's 25 points for the series but they had to settle for 2nd on the 6-level tie breaker.

Race 15

Aug 20, 2008      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - John Haller. Light, but steady wind out of the north. Course to Cotton Point, downwind to Hogback, upwind finish. Some excitement at the start next to committee boat with Crackerjack and Jako. The A-Syms battled it out for line honors, with Flying Circus taking the Gold. Thanks to the Brodies for providing the committee boat.

Race 14

Aug 13, 2008      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Bill Zautner. W-2 Course to Canoe and back down to Hogback. A good start with everyone taking a short tack to the left and then with Witch Way tacking first onto port, led the fleet around the course close behind the two J/80s, but enough to win on corrected time. The RC did a great job informing everyone to the Change of Course, which required some quicker tactics for those still behind to catch-up. The downwind allowed Spirit to move from 10th to 5th, but they still took the race as a throwout in the overall standings. It's a close series between 2nd-5th, with only two races left.

Race 13

Aug 06, 2008      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Steve Jackson. Actually Steve raced; it was the ladies of Jako that RC'd a great race for the 23 boats. It was a great finish to the all-day North Sails Clinic held at the LGC. As far as the race it was an I-2 up to a mark off the west shore and back down to Hogback. Amazing enough was that the wind blew fairly steady from the west with a few shifts that help several boats make gains. Wild Thing crossed first, then Crackerjack, but not enough to keep Joy from winning on corrected time.

Race 12

Jul 30, 2008      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Stephen Honeybill. Another light air race but that didn't stop Jag from sending us on the longest course yet. An I-1 up to Diamond and back with a short little hook to finish the shortened course in 2 hours. Double Trouble was very fast as he rolled the fleet. Once he passed over Witch Way they got clear air and made it to the windward mark ahead of the fleet with Vaporize just back from the NOODS in Marblehead. He and Wild Thing banged hard left to Assembly Point going up and then back down again while Witch Way sailed into the doldrums to the west shore where he eventually dropped out. Joy held tough around the course and finished best corrected time.

Race 11

Jul 23, 2008      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Amir Mujezinovic. Wednesday Night's race abandonment was finally announced to the crowd of sailors who were waiting eagerly in their foul-weather gear inside the Lake George Club. Watching the Doppler radar on the computer and TV and with heavy rain all day, then claps of thunder and lightning, made for a wise decision by Amir. Everyone who showed up received a SC-10 finish for their effort. That is known as a Social Credit, taken into account in a tie situation, otherwise, a likely throw-out.

Race 10

Jul 16, 2008      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Sam Hoopes. No wind again by 6 after a great wind all afternoon! It just didn't matter to the RC and those that followed them as they set an optimistic I3 course. The wind did pick up just enough to get us started. Spirit and Vaporize both got great starts which put them rounding the first mark in that order. The short puffs of wind came from every direction allowing several lucky J/22s and Crackerjack to scoot to the next mark. At each mark there was a cluster of boats drifting around it trying to catch what little air there was to get moving. At Hog Back there was a current which made it worse so most had to tack to make it around! Thank goodness the race was shortened to once around. Not fun for most, just the leaders. Longest (time) and shortest (distance) race yet. When the sun went down the wind picked up to allow the last boats to sail home in the dark.

Race 9

Jul 09, 2008      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - John Tarrant. The forecast threatened us with storms but it was just the opposite for our evening race. Clear skies and a gentle breeze allowed the RC to chose a W1½ course from Hogback upwind to a buoy just off the west shore. The last boat to get out to the starting area ended up being the boat that won the race. No time to plan their start. The crew of Crackerjack just knew they had to get on the other side of the line at 1 minute, turn and go. After the race it was time to gather for the Mid-series party in the LGC grotto, sponsored by the J/24 fleet. Everyone had a lot of fun.

Race 8

Jul 02, 2008      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Kyle Lavoy. Doing RC duties was as much fun as racing for the crew of Uncle Ludwig. Even Deb from Spirit jumped ship to "help" with the times. One of our longest courses of the season from Hogback upwind to Diamond, twice around, in a moderate breeze. One tack up and back, except for the asysmetricals. The race was shortened on the second downwind leg in the dying breeze. Wild Thing led the way once again with Vaporize, Spirit, and Revolution not letting him get too far ahead. The RC shortened the course to get everyone finished in just under 2 hours. Congratulations to the crew of Spirit for our first win of the season.

Race 7

Jun 25, 2008      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - The Viper crew of Dougall/Nelson had their turn as RC. With light winds (what else is new about wed night) from the SW/W, a twice around course was set from Hogback to a mark set a mile away on a heading of 260 deg. Wild Thing took the start on the pin end with a jumble at the boat end. After boats had rounded the 1st mark, winds died, so the course was shortened at Hogback with Wild Thing leading from start to finish. All boats finished in a bit over 1 hr.

Race 6

Jun 18, 2008      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee: the crew of Wild Thing, on board Tom's new Cobalt. A light breeze out of the south. Course was an "I" starting just east of Yankee, around the south Canoe buoy, then the south LGC marker, twice around. Twenty boats on the line, with a big crowd down at the pin end at the start, just as a light rain started. Bandit was OCS but chose to keep sailing. Most went west of Canoe, with Uncle Ludwig, Crackerjack and Fat Star taking the east side; it worked well for Ludwig, which was first around the mark. As the rain eased, the breeze filled in along Long Island. The fleet sailed high on starboard to reach the wind line, then jibed for the leeward mark. RC shortened course and set up the finish at the north Canoe buoy. Vaporize stretched out on the last upwind leg in the fading breeze, finishing more than five minutes in front of the next boat, but not enough to win on corrected time. A great race from Jupiter and the new J/22 USA1606, finishing 1-2 tonight.

Race 5

Jun 11, 2008      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Ken Herd. Not just Ken but the whole crew did RC duties. Now that's teamwork! Great I-3 course was set into a tricky west wind. With the square line the boats who tacked to the right first made out big time. At the weather mark, 1/4 mile off the west shore, Joy was around first followed by Spirit and then Wild Thing. It stayed that way at the finish with a change or two in between. Tactics in the shifty wind allowed Spirit to get ahead when Joy overstood the weather mark but they split downwind and Joy got it back. The rest of the fleet was tight as seen by the finishing times. 19 boats competed and all crew celebrated Deb's birthday back on shore and at Carl R's.

Race 4

Jun 04, 2008      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Alfie Merchant. Tonight the wind held steady enough for the RC to give us a square line into the north breeze. The fleet spread out from one end of the starting line to the other with some aggressive moves for positioning. Some great tactics allowed many lead changes for the 9 J/24s competing in their Fleet series. The Viper shot in front and didn't have to contend with any of that but had to deal with the killer shifts up to the weather buoy dropped near Boon Bay. Positions changed several times around Canoe Is mark and Boon Bay but then with the shortened course, it was a reach to the finish with Vaporize and then Jag crossing in just under an hour.

Race 3

May 28, 2008      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - John Dickinson. Just when the RC thought they had a square line to the north LGC harbor marker the wind went west and everyone had to tack and start on port. The RC called one over early. Nice restart Jako! How did you do that and end up with the leaders around the first mark? Good things happen to good sports! It was a great "I" course, twice around Canoe Is, finish in the middle, with great wind the whole race. Again the asymmeticals loved the reaches and left all of us in the dust. Wild Thing crossed the line way in front but just couldn't put enough time between the J/24s. Nice job Ken Herd!

Race 2

May 21, 2008      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Andrew Brodie. Big shifts in a south to west wind made for a tricky start but a good course from Hog Back to Canoe, twice around, downwind finish. Christina kept things organized on the committee boat with great flag work and a close call down the line. The RC was the place to start when the wind went west and made for a straight shot to Canoe. While Spirit was getting rolled by Wild Thing at the pin, Vaporize and a couple of J/24s started at the RC and left the rest of us standing. When things cleared Cut Loose and Jag were up front. After the turn Dougall and Snowdon got the Viper on a plane and never looked back. At the bottom of the first run, over my shoulder comes Haller and crew in Revolution rolling over me again. Hey, what's with you J/80s! That's the good and the bad of PHRF sailing. But fun. A quick race and a fun sail back to the docks.

Race 1

May 14, 2008      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Rodger Voss. The first race of the season brought out 15 competitors in brisk winds. With expectations that it would hold we set a 3-times-around "I" course, south around all of Canoe Is and then down to a buoy off of LGC. At the start the wind lightened to make the start a little crowded along with the short starting line. After the windward mark Revolution extended his lead downwind followed by Vaporize and Crackerjack. The RC had to shorten course to Canoe in the dying breeze. The wind was perfect for the J/24 Fleet's genoas and brought them up through the rest finishing Crackerjack 1st, Uncle Ludwig 2nd, and Flying Circus 3rd.
