Race 19*1

Sep 19, 2007      Wind Conditions: Medium

Meredith McComb- RC. We did two short races, on a 3-minute starting sequence, and all finished smiling. A small but amused fleet may meet again next week. As race committee, I discover that if the starting line is short enough, no one is materially disadvantaged if it isn't square. So heave a lifejacket off the boat and signal the start of the count down before it can drift too far.

Race *18

Sep 12, 2007      Wind Conditions: Light

Dave McComb - RC. Probably one of the best run races this summer. Thanks Dave and Sam. Using Hog Back to start they set a mark in the middle of the lake to the NW. The wind kept going west of course, so after two change-of-courses on a 5-leg race, keeping the weather mark to weather, the very tight upwind battle between Spirit, Wild Thing, and Vaporize in the light wind, ended up favoring the asymetricals. Nice job. Whoops, where did that J/22 come from!

Race *17

Sep 05, 2007      Wind Conditions: Light

Alfie Merchant - RC. *First post-series race attracted 10 boats for a light-air race. Starting 30 minutes early allowed plenty of daylight to send the fleet around Hogback and finish back at the LGC buoy.

Race 16

Aug 29, 2007      Wind Conditions: Medium

Bob Miller - RC. One of the best courses of the summer and what a perfect night for the last race. The RC started the race right on time with everyone finishing within an hour. Nice job Bob Miller and Chuck Thorne. They kept the 24 boat fleet moving around the I-course, windward to north Canoe, downwind to south LGC, twice around, finish in the middle. It was tight competition all around the course, especially at the finish with two boats smashing into each other at the pin! And what a great turn out at Carl R's to congratulate the winners. Rodger started out the awards presentation by thanking all of those that volunteered as Race Committee this year and announced the order, in reverse, for duties next year. Bill Zautner and Stephen Honeybill secured their spots in the top 16 with their best finishes of the series, 5th and 6th respectively. Nice job Spirit: 1st Place again this year for Rodger Voss and crew.

Race 15

Aug 22, 2007      Wind Conditions: Light

John Dickinson - RC. Imagine 28 boats out on a Wednesday Night. Well John, you win the prize. Even LGC sent out a Laser and Flying Junior to mix it up with the Pearson 30' and all sizes of J boats. A tricky south breeze spread out the fleet quickly. Some thought the RC said North Canoe and headed for the wrong mark but recovered quickly to the south buoy. Spirit was around first and took the Yankee trail to the west. The Brodies were quick to remind him of them doing that once, and learned from their mistake. Spirit didn't and ended up way behind. Crackerjack along with the rest of the fleet went east and won the race.

Race 14

Aug 15, 2007      Wind Conditions: Medium

Mark Ackerle - RC. Everyone had the start timed perfectly at the committee boat, but we were all at the same spot. Many were caught barging and had to spin out and jybe around and try again. One actually hit them and did their penalty turn at the finish. A very tactical upwind leg into a shifty north wind to Cotton Point, back down to Hogback and then a short upwind leg to the finish. Crackerjack and Spirit broke away from the pack at the windward mark with Wild Thing closing in fast at the leeward mark. Brooke Beckos returned to join Spirit's crew and did her majic flying the chute and put Spirit out in front to win.

Race 12

Aug 01, 2007      Wind Conditions: Light

Sam Hoopes - RC. The pin-end was the favored place to start. Just getting there was tough if you got caught in the hole at the RC end, and no way to catch-up in the shortest race of the season. Short for those in front that finished in a half-hour, where those left behind took an hour. The twice-around "I" course was shortened to once around, which turned out to be a sprint race. Dougall just back from a regatta in Marblehead took his knocks there but learned a lot, obviously, and won his first Wednesday Night Race with his Viper. Congratulations!

Race 11

Jul 25, 2007      Wind Conditions: Light

Tom Selfridge - RC. If there was a contest for the RC with the most boats, Tom would be in the lead with 26! Enough wind at the start to send us to Diamond and back but had to shorten the course. It was still a 2-hour race for some. Crackerjack was the fastest from start to finish. Jon will be submitting his own rendition of how he did it. Welcome a new J/24 to Fleet 24, Dark Waters from Canoe Island Lodge.

Race 10

Jul 18, 2007      Wind Conditions: Light

Amir Mujezinovic - RC. Most boats motored or were towed out to the starting area and waited to see if we would actually start a race in no wind, but no rain thank goodness! There was just enough though to convince Amir to send us twice around in what turned out to be a 180 degree wind shift that picked up to about 6. The 22's were out in front on the left but Crackerjack and Jaded found the south breeze first out in the middle and caught up to round in a pack of about six boats. Spirit footed off and went wide around the pack under Jaded. After a tactical crossing and a close rounding with Wild Thing, Spirit sailed fast up the last beat to win by two minutes.

Race 9

Jul 11, 2007      Wind Conditions: Light

Bill Zautner - RC. 40 brave Wednesday Night competitors (about 14 boats) made it over to the Lake George Club to wait out the delay. There was no wind up until 6:38 when the wind filled in quick from the north and south with dark clouds and thunder rumbling over the mountains. Bill watched the Doppler closely and made the call to abandon the race for safety concerns.

Race 8

Jul 04, 2007      Wind Conditions: Medium

Kyle Lavoy - RC. One of the best courses of the season! On the 4th of July, yet we were the only ones out there. It was wet but 13 of the finest braved the conditions. The RC timing was perfect and a square line caught a couple of boats over early. A strategic first beat around the southern Canoe Island danger buoy allowed OCS Flying Circus, after restarting, to sneak around the other side and come out in the front of the pack. Downwind to the northern LGC mark, twice around, finish in the middle. Joy broke away from the pack while the J/24s had a close tactical race to the finish.

Jun 27, 2007      Wind Conditions: Medium

Rodger Voss - RC. What was set up as a perfectly square line and upwind leg directly into a SW breeze as predicted, turned hard east in the last few minutes of the sequence and then south, to give the fleet a port start and an easy reach around Canoe Islands. The course was twice around with Wild Thing leading the whole way, however Jaded won on CT, with Liam at the helm.

Race 6

Jun 20, 2007      Wind Conditions: Medium

Bob Ripple - RC. Another strong and shifty breeze from the NW. Course was Hogback to Cotton Pt, twice around downwind finish. Wind went west at the start. Boats had to tack onto port to get across the line. Long port tack to Cotton spread out the fleet. Sam sails that route every Wednesday night going back home so it's no wonder he knew how to play the shifts upwind, and eventually won on CT.

Race 5

Jun 13, 2007      Wind Conditions: Medium

John Tarrant - RC. Breezy east winds to start. Mark set 400yds north of LI to N LGC twice around, start and finish in the middle. Shortened to N LGC. Big wind shifts and reaching provided some fast sailing and knock-downs. Thanks to Vaporize for an exciting rounding at the windward mark with Nelson standing on the keel trying to bring her back up. Dave is considering renaming his Viper to This Side Up III.

Race 4

Jun 06, 2007      Wind Conditions: Heavy

Jon and Susan Brodie - RC. 21 boats! And 12 J/24's at the start, racing in their separate Fleet 24 Series. Wow. And what a start, with gusty wind out of the NW. A major port-starboard T-bone at the start took one J/24 out for the night. Start in the middle, to Cotton Pt to N. Canoe to finish. Short but sweet. The low handicap boats flew around the course with the J/80s leading the pack!
