The wind kindly decided to swing west prior to the race this week and was at a nice cooling 6 knots. A W6 course was called with the starting area just north of Hogback and the windward Orange Ball mark at 260O several hundred yards off Canoe Island Lodge’s moorings. 17 boats gathered around the committee boat making it our largest fleet for the year! Welcome to Bob Miller and crew – may the “Forza” be with you - and under you – at all times. Although the line was short for the 17 boat fleet there were no real contests on the line. All boats were ~ 1 - 1.5 boats off the line at the start making it easy for the RC to call the all clear. Lots of tacking on the first leg split the fleet up and it was great to see so many sails back lit with the sun. Vaporize led the way around the 1st mark in 14:41, with Witch Way, Iko Iko, and Brad’s J80 in company. Brad lost some distance to Uncle Ludwig with an hour-glassed chute but recovered well on the downwind leg. Wild Thing opted for a more northerly route back to the leeward mark rounding 3rd behind Vaporize at and Brad’s J80 respectively. Dave and Nelson increased their lead on the 3rd leg in the surprising steady breeze. Meanwhile the RC was watching a large wind hole developing south of the Canoe Islands and as the boats rounded the 3rd mark decided to finish them at the next mark. Spirit made up a lot of ground on the final leg passing Witch Way but not quite enough to catch Uncle Ludwig at the finish. Windog also made up some ground following Spirit into slightly higher wind velocity. Congratulations to Dave Brad and Spencer crossing in sequence for line honors. However, Uncle Ludwig took the victory with Spirit’s entanglement at the finish. Well done Windog on taking 3rd for the night. As it turned out the wind continued to blow for all boats to sail back to their docks.
